I visited Guthrie last night (or is it this morning?) for their midnight practice for the first day of full pads.

You can tell that the Bluejays are good and fired up for the 2011 season, as they should be. Guthrie enters the season as one of the favorites in Class 5A with 15 starters back off last year’s 11-2 team that lost in the state semifinals.

Junior quarterback Bryan Dutton is back after throwing for 2,408 yards and 29 touchdowns a year ago. Senior left tackle Blake Belcher (6-foot-5, 280 pounds) is a three-year starter with offers from Stanford, Arizona, Oregon State, Tulsa and Iowa State.

Defensively, the Bluejays bring back eight starters, including senior linebacker Landry Chappell, who has 423 career tackles and 15 career sacks, and senior safety Luke Davis, who made 107 tackles and picked off two passes in 2010.

The practice ended with the “Okie Drill,” which consists of two step over dummies on each side, parallel to each other to create a field that is five yards wide. There are two three-player teams, with each team getting three plays on offense. Last night, the losing team did 25 push-ups, and both teams did them if there was a tie.

The practice was a blast to watch, and I’m very excited to see the Bluejays in action once the season starts.
