Edmond North senior Jesse Mathews will be the team’s starting quarterback for its first game at Southmoore, coach Jeremy Dombek said Monday.

Mathews had been competing with junior Luke Hoskins to replace two-year starter Travis Townsend.

Mathews was the junior varsity’s quarterback as a sophomore and a starting receiver for the Edmond North varsity team last year. Hoskins was the JV quarterback last season.

The competition had been tight, and Dombek said before last week’s scrimmage at Moore that the decision was getting harder.

Dombek has said that he won’t use a two-quarterback system.
