Millwood adds football game against Deion Sanders' Prime Prep on Sept. 14
Millwood’s football schedule had an open spot in Week 3, and Prime Prep Academy of the Dallas area has suddenly found itself in need of opponents.
So it was a perfect pairing for the two teams, which have agreed to meet at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 at Millwood, according to Falcons coach Tony Henry.
Prime Prep, a charter school co-founded by NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, was told by the University Interscholastic League, which oversees high school sports in Texas, that it could not field a team for varsity athletics in its district.
Because the game at Millwood is not a District 11-3A game, the UIL ruling has no bearing. The UIL’s decision to ban Prime Prep from varsity district games was based on the school’s use of players from school districts outside the proper parameters.
Prime Prep draws students from 19 school districts, but only those who reside in the Dallas Independent School District are allowed to play varsity sports in the first year of the school’s existence.
According to reports, Prime Prep is expected to open its season Aug. 31 against Parish Episcopal of Dallas, which plays in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, not governed by the UIL.
Millwood, which is in the winner’s bracket of the All-City Preview scrimmages Friday night at Douglass, will open the season Aug. 31 at home against Star Spencer, then head to Douglass for the Soul Bowl Sept. 8.
