Edmond North senior Jesse Mathews emerged from an intense battle in the preseason with junior Luke Hoskins to win the Huskies’ quarterback job.

So far, he’s been impressive.

Mathews has thrown for nine touchdowns and just one interception — and it was a junk interception at the end of a half — for the 3-0 Huskies.

Mathews almost earned the Edmond North quarterback job two seasons ago as a sophomore, but he lost out to Travis Townsend, who was the starter for the past two seasons.

That quarterback battle was a three-way competition with Mathews, Townsend and then-senior Danny Rossi.

“It was very, very close between all three of those guys,” Huskies coach Jeremy Dombek said. “But we almost went with Jesse because we knew how talented he was, and thought if he could start as a sophomore, just think how good he’ll be by the time he’s a senior.”
