Metro Christian quarterback Andrew Hearon was named the Gatorade Oklahoma Football Player of the Year on Thursday.

Hearon threw for 3,695 yards, 42 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions this year, helping the Patriots to the Class 3A quarterfinals.

Metro Christian lost at Anadarko last week and finished 12-1.

The award recognizes athletic excellence as well as academic achievement and high character on and off the field.

Recent state winners of the award include Mustang’s David Glidden (2010), Tulsa Central’s Demarco Cobbs (2009), Midwest City’s Timothy Flanders (2008) and Jenks’ Mark Ginther (2007).

With the award, Hearon is also a finalist for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award, which will be announced in December.
