The Showtime comedy “Nurse Jackie” has been renewed for a fifth season and Peabody Award winner/Emmy Award nominee Clyde Phillips has been named as the series’ new showrunner, according to a news release.

Phillips, who was the executive producer and showrunner on the first four seasons of the  Showtime drama “Dexter,” will join Richie Jackson as executive producer on “Nurse Jackie.” Caryn Mandabach is also an executive producer of the series.

The fifth season of “Nurse Jackie,” co-produced by Showtime and Lionsgate, will start production in late 2012.

Emmy Award-winning actress Edie Falco stars as Jackie Peyton, a strong-willed and intelligent, but very flawed, emergency room nurse.

Cast members also include Eve Best, Merritt Wever, Paul Schulze, Dominic Fumusa, Anna Deavere Smith and Peter Facinelli.

Arjun Gupta and Stephen Wallem are guest stars and Lenny Jacobson co-stars.
