Matt LeBlanc is back as Matt LeBlanc, sort of, in the second season of the comedy “Episodes,” premiering at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, July 1 on Showtime.
LeBlanc, who won a Golden Globe Award for this role as a fictionalized version of himself, is absolutely hysterical and the show itself is equally amusing and witty.
Season One of “Episodes” started with British writing couple Beverly (Tamsin Greig) and Sean Lincoln’s (Stephen Mangan) humorous journey of bringing their comedy “Lyman’s Boys” to the U.S. and its transformation into a show called “Pucks!” starring Matt LeBlanc.
The duo also became friends with Matt along the way, and in a state of drunken madness, Beverly slept with Matt, leaving her marriage in shambles at the end of Season One.
Now as Season Two begins a few months later, Sean and Beverly aren’t living together any more, but they have to work together since “Pucks!” has been picked up for a series run.
Beverly wants to repair her marriage to Sean, but he, understandably, has more difficulty in deciding where he wants their relationship to go.
Matt also wants to get back in Sean’s good graces and continues to manage to find himself in inappropriate relationships.
Ratings drop quickly for the “Pucks!” show, and from Beverly, Sean and Matt to network head Merc Lapidus (John Pankow) and his second in command Carol Rance (Kathleen Rose Perkins), they all have to deal with ways to save the series.
The writing by David Crane (“Friends”) and Jeffrey Klarik (“Mad About You”) and the performances by LeBlanc and the entire cast of “Episodes,” which also includes Mircea Monroe, Genevieve O’Reilly, Daisy Haggard and Katherine Ryan, are exceptional.
The segments and references relating to LeBlanc’s former show “Friends” are priceless, as well.
“Episodes” is a must-see show for television fans.
