Bravo Media has signed actress Anna Gunn to star in the lead role in “Rita,” one of the network’s first scripted drama pilots scheduled to begin production this spring.
“Rita” will be directed by Miguel Arteta, who also serves as executive producer for the pilot.
Bravo also recently announced they greenlit another scripted drama pilot “The Joneses,” produced by ABC Studios, as part of the network’s overall strategy to extend its non-scripted original programming lineup into the scripted genre.
“Rita” and “The Joneses” center on the complex dynamics of modern families, according to a news release.
Bravo plans to premiere its first original scripted series in the fourth quarter of 2013.
Gunn, an Emmy Award nominee, currently stars as Skyler White on AMC’s “Breaking Bad.” Her television credits include “Deadwood” “The Practice,” “Six Feet Under,” and “ER,” and her film credits include “Enemy of the State” and “Without Evidence.”
“Rita,” an adaptation of the Danish format of the same name, is billed as an edgy, humorous and acerbic family drama that follows an outspoken private school teacher who struggles to raise her own three teenage children while dealing with the inane bureaucracy and overprotective parents at her school.
The drama, produced by Fox Television Studios, is written and executive produced by Krista Vernoff (“Shameless,” “Grey’s Anatomy”) with Mikkel Bondesen (“Burn Notice,” “The Killing”) and Henrik Bastin executive producing for Fabrik Entertainment. Kristen Campo is also a co-executive producer for Fabrik Entertainment.
