Showtime’s first pilot for 2013, “The Vatican,” is written by two-time Academy Award nominee (“Quiz Show,” “Donnie Brasco”) and three-time Emmy Award nominee (“House M.D.”) Paul Attanasio and will be directed by triple Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Sir Ridley Scott (“Gladiator,” “Blade Runner,” “The Good Wife”).

“The Vatican” is Scott’s first ever directed pilot for television.

“The Vatican” is billed as “a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic Church” and “will explore the relationships and rivalries as well as the mysteries and miracles behind one of the world’s most hidden institutions,” according to a news release.

Production starts in 2013 by Sony Pictures Television in association with Showtime for series consideration, with Attanasio, Scott and David Zucker (“The Good Wife”) serving as executive producers.
