Channel your inner femme fatale with some film noir-inspired fashion ideas for spring.

Film noir, or “dark film,” of the 1940s featured women whose feminine wiles were irresistible to their leading men, who inevitably fall under their spells.

Some classic themes to the femme fatale: Generally, before her darker side is known, she's featured in white. As her more sinister character is revealed, her wardrobe reflects the darker tones.

The femme fatale's wardrobe of slim silhouettes, risky high hemlines and platform heels reveals a glamorous confidence the likes of which filmgoers were unlikely to find in real life.

This is no damsel in distress, and actresses such as Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Barbara Stanwyck embraced these types of roles not as steps backward for women, but as a way to play against stereotypes of the day and to portray complex women who were desirable and glamorous yet riddled with flaws.
