Anthony Gardner knows what championship basketball looks like. Now he hopes to impart that knowledge on his new team.

Gardner, who spent nine seasons as Patrick Cudjoe's assistant with the Star Spencer boys, was named the Douglass girls coach last week.

He takes over a team that is coming off a tough season, but reached the state tournament in 2012.

Gardner's coaching career began at Oklahoma City's Roosevelt Middle School in 2002 before moving to Star Spencer.

During his time at Star, Gardner helped coach the Bobcats to the 2009 Class 4A state championship and multiple state tournament appearances.

“I'm excited to be a part of the Douglass family and the Douglass community,” said Gardner, who is originally from Hobbs, N.M. “I've been a part of a program that has a tradition of winning state championships and getting to the last game. I feel like I got a lot of valuable experience at Star Spencer.

“I want to take that with me to Douglass and get these young ladies back to where they want to be.”
