An Edmond firefighter who fought a five-year battle with cancer has died, Maj. Bill Brown said.

Capt. John Werhun, 42, died Saturday at his home. Werhun was a 19-year veteran and a fire captain at Station 1.

“It's been a long, hard-fought battle,” Brown said. “John fought it with honor and courage. He remained on the job for 90 percent of the time he was ill. We were blessed to have him as a firefighter and as a member of our community, and we're proud of him as a person and as a member of the department.”

His co-workers and friends rallied behind Werhun by selling black and red bracelets to raise money for expenses for his wife and two teenage daughters.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church of Edmond.
