Dear Westboro Baptist Church,
Really, guys, REALLY?
Tonight, you’ll be in OKC protesting Game 5 of the NBA Playoffs bout between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Houston Rockets, all because professional basketball player Jason Collins recently came out of the closet.
You blame everything that goes wrong in the world on homosexuality, based purely on your congregation’s dangerously extreme ideologies to the point where you’re mostly referred to as a hate group.
But you need to know something: You guys are your own worst enemy.
When your entire existence revolves around hating on a group of people, then you’re missing the point about Christianity. When your entire congregation is so focused on what protest you’re going to do next, or what way you can shock people into paying attention to you, then you’re basically crossing over into an example of idolatry of an ideal rather than the worshiping of God and Jesus.
This just pushes level-headed people away. I think most people would respectfully listen to what you have to say, even if they disagree with it. But you’re presenting yourselves in such a way that it’s difficult for anyone to take you seriously.
You guys are just good old fashioned bullies. You think your religious beliefs should hold sway over everyone, regardless of what our nation’s Constitution says. And whatever, you’re free to think that, but vote on the issues your way at the polls and leave it at that. Don’t try to impose your views on people outside of your congregation.
As a journalist, I value the Constitution, with special consideration given to the First Amendment.
But you all are the absolute worst kind of advocate for the freedom of speech. Just because you can say it doesn’t mean you should. Leave the hate speech to your sermons and church events, and leave everyone else out of it. Because, seriously, when people like Bill O’Reilly and Michael Moore agree you guys are absurd, then you’re clearly doing something wrong.
And is it really worth hating so many people? You hate Jews, Catholics, homosexuals and non-whites just to name a few. It must really suck living that kind of life, where you can’t see the forest for the trees.
It’s a pity. We pity you.
We could ignore you and hope you just go away, but chances are you'll just continue to fester and find new ways to expel your hate. We'd much rather deal with you head-on in the form of showing our support for the people you belittle.
Good luck with your planned protest tonight in Oklahoma City. Although we’re part of the Bible Belt, the majority of Oklahomans won’t give you the chance to make fools of yourselves.
You can thank us later.
