NORMAN — Investigators have identified the man shot Wednesday by a Norman police officer.
Richard Darwin Eaton, 44, of Norman, is in police custody at OU Medical Center, where he is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds, police Capt. Tom Easley said.
A hospital spokesman said Thursday he couldn't release Eaton's condition.
The police officer who shot Eaton is on administrative leave. Department policy prevents the release of the officer's name for 72 hours, Easley said.
The shooting occurred about noon Wednesday after Eaton — carrying a knife — entered Wendy's restaurant, 1908 W Main St., and hit a woman in the face, Easley said.
Eaton fled the restaurant and was crossing the parking lot at a nearby Sinclair gas station when a female police officer pulled into the lot and confronted him.
“She ordered him to halt and drop the knife, but he continued to advance on her,” Easley said.
She opened fire on him, striking him multiple times, he said.
