College softball: Kansas surprises No. 1 Oklahoma, 2-0

Jayhawks notch first win against top-ranked team in program history; OSU loses to No. 6-ranked Texas, but Cowgirls take series

Top-ranked Oklahoma suffered its second shutout loss of the season Sunday, dropping a 2-0 decision to Kansas in Big 12 softball in Lawrence. OU won the first game of the doubleheader, 4-2.

Kansas (31-16 overall, 6-8 Big 12) beat a No. 1 ranked team for the first time in program history. The Jayhawks scored a run in the first inning, and pitcher Kelsey Kessler made it stand up by blanking the Sooners (44-4, 12-2) on seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Kansas added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a bases loaded passed ball.

TEXAS TOPS COWGIRLS

Brejae Washington and Taylor Thom each homered and accounted for five RBIs Sunday, helping No. 6-ranked Texas whip Oklahoma State 7-2 in Big 12 softball in Stillwater. Oklahoma State (30-23 overall, 6-9 Big 12) won two of three games against the Longhorns (43-8, 13-4).

Texas led 5-0 before OSU scored twice in the bottom of the third inning. The Longhorns put it away with two more runs in the fifth inning.

Longhorns pitcher Blaire Luna was strong. She allowed five hits and three walks, but she struck out 14 of the 29 batters she faced.
