Class 6A golf: Eli Armstrong is Edmond North's most consistent player

Nick Heinen and Hayden Wood are the Edmond North golfers who get most of the outside attention. And rightfully so, with Wood shooting a blistering 6-under 66 in the second round of the Class 6A tournament on Monday and Heinen narrowly missing out on medalist honors after falling to defending champ Max McGreevy of Edmond Santa Fe on the second playoff hole.

But coach Jeff Doherty gave a special plug to Eli Armstrong after the school won its ninth consecutive team title Tuesday, calling the senior the team's most consistent player in 2013.

And that consistency came in the final season of what has been an up-and-down high school career.

Armstrong made the state championship roster as a freshman, but was beat out as a sophomore and junior. He then reclaimed a spot in the top 5 this year, won the regional title and finished in the top 10 of this week's state tournament. In the process, he earned a golf scholarship to Central Oklahoma.

“He had a fabulous year,” Doherty said. “And that's really hard for a kid that makes it as a freshman and then gets beat out his sophomore and junior years and then stays with it. I love that story. That's a great story to tell people.

“It doesn't always happen that way. It can't happen if you don't keep grinding and work hard at it. And he did. And it paid off for him.”

Jenks' Connor Houston picked a great time for his first-ever hole-in-one.

Houston needed just one swing to conquer No. 15 at Karsten Creek in Tuesday's final round, using a 7-iron and aiming about 5 yards to the right of the 177-yard hole.
