TULSA — Between Bob Stoops’ comments about the College Football Playoff selection committee, the SEC and Trent Dilfer, the OU coach made lots of news with his Tulsa caravan appearance Monday.

But Stoops’ physical appearance — specifically, the stitches on his right cheek — created some buzz, too.

The Sooners’ coach acknowledged before his interview session that doctors had removed a “pre-cancerous” growth, but that it was nothing serious.

“It was something that had to obviously be cut out,” Stoops said. “No big deal. I’m good.”

The word “cancer” alone is terrifying, but the removal of a pre-cancerous mole really isn’t anything to be worried about. The minor procedure was 100 percent precautionary, and it’s impossible to know with any certainty if the growth would’ve actually become something more serious.

I’ve been asked several times since Monday about Stoops’ cheek, so this post is to clarify the situation.
