How about a little Mardi Gras?
How about a little Mardi Gras?

Down on Bourbon Street tonight, you’ll have no problem finding beads, nor people to willing to go to extreme lengths to acquire them.

The most common fuel for this behavior will be The Hurricane, made famous by Pat O’Brien’s Bar in New Orleans.

At first glance, this appears to be Kool-Aid and rum, which in many cases it is. Pat O’Brien’s even sells a powder mix for the drink, which even smells of Tropical Punch Kool-Aid mix.
But the truth is, the sweet base for this concoction can be found in passion fruit syrup, found at places like Java Dave’s. So, without further ado, here’s your Hurricane recipe for Fat Tuesday.
And let the good times roll…

Hurricane

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces light rum (or you can split it 2 ounces white to 2 ounces dark or 3 to 1. Whatever you do, don’t waste the good stuff like Sailor Jerry’s on this.)
  • 4 ounces Passion Fruit syrup
  • 2 teasoons grenadine
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
  • Ice
  • Fresh lime, sliced in thin wedges
  • Fresh orange, sliced in thin wedges
  • Maraschino cherries

Directions

  1. Fill a Hurricane glass with glass
  2. Fill a shaker with ingredients plus ice.
  3. Shake til shaker begins to frost, then strain into glass.
  4. Garnish with Maraschino cherry, lime and orange slices
