This week, the oddest DVD to appear on release lists is:

“Zonad”

Mix a wee bit of Irish blarney with a wild alien space invaders spoof and you have a whimsical amalgam called “Zonad,” an oddball comedy by brothers John and Kieran Carney due out on DVD Tuesday.

John Carney (best known for writing and directing the Oscar-winning musical romance “Once”) teamed up in 2009 with brother Kieran to expand on this premise for a short sci-fi spoof they made together in college in 2003.

The feature-length story, set in the little Irish village of Ballymoran, eyes the household of the gullible Cassidy family, who one day awaken to find a man clad in red leather and passed out on their living room floor. The besotted visitor (Simon Delaney) purports to be Zonad, an alien who has landed on Earth to study human ways.

Actually, he’s a petty thief escaped from a nearby alcoholic rehab center. But the credulous Cassidy clan treats this weirdo like royalty, and soon Zonad is luxuriating in his instant celebrity, enjoying free beer, posh quarters and the cooing attentions of village lasses – especially Jenny (Janice Byrne), the family’s beautiful teenage daughter – who compete for his affections.
