In multiplexes it’s been ‘the summer of the flamethrower’

Sure this summer has been hot, hot, hot in Oklahoma. But by all accounts it has been equally hot on movie screens – flamethrower hot.

With teaser footage for Universal’s upcoming remake/prequel of “The Thing” promising the prominent use of a flamethrower (much like the one wielded by Kurt Russell in John Carpenter’s cult-favorite 1982 version of the film), it’s worth noting that three other movies this summer have also featured characters brandishing flamethrowers.

Here’ the summer of 2011’s flamethrower roundup:

“Captain America: The First Avenger” – Patriotic Marvel Comics superhero Captain America (Chris Evans) and his indestructible, iconic shield battle Hydra soldiers wielding two-fisted flamethrowers. And how about that nifty flamethrower exhaust system on Steve Rogers’ motorcycle?

“Thirty Minutes or Less” – Doofus bad guys Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson) fuel their lame-brained bank robbery scheme with a faulty flamethrower that they concocted in their garage workshop.
