This week, the oddest DVD to appear on release lists is:

“It Takes a Thief: The Compete First Season”

Long before USA Network’s currently popular “White Collar” series, in which a former crook is co-opted by law enforcement to employ his illicit skills and turn the tables on bad guys, there was the 1968 espionage series “It Takes a Thief” (the first of three seasons due out on DVD Tuesday).

Starring the veteran but still baby-faced Robert Wagner as dashing international cat burglar turned U.S. spy Alexander Mundy, the series ran over three seasons (1968-70) for 65 episodes. The first season spans 16 episodes.

Suave and sophisticated, Mundy lives a playboy’s life as the world’s greatest cat burglar, until he’s finally busted and strikes a deal with American spymaster Noah Bain (Malachi Throne). In exchange for a full pardon, Mundy agrees to use his dubious skills to steal for the S.I.A., the government’s clandestine spy agency.
