Reality shows are so much more fun when you can cheer for someone with an Oklahoma connection, even if it’s a tiny one. So here’s your local connection on “Project Runway” – Shirin Askari, 24, was born in Tulsa.
The aspiring designer lives in Richardson, Texas, and is competing for the prize package, which includes $100,000 cash to start a fashion line and a trip to Paris.
For the season opener on Lifetime last week, the challenge was to design an innovative red carpet look representing the designer’s point of view. The budget? $200.
“I was so excited when I found out we were doing a red carpet challenge because that’s my dream to make Oscar dresses,” she said on the video blog posted on mylifetime.com.
Askari, a freelance designer selling her own clothes online, learned to sew as a child and earned a degree in fashion design at the University of North Texas.
Her influences include classic movie stars such as Fred Astaire, Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Her favorite designers include Elie Saab, Jaques Fath, Christian Dior and Hussein Chalayan.
“Project Runway” airs at 9 p.m. Thursdays on Lifetime.
