6:03: Of course, no red carpet would be complete without Tim Gunn, who is joined by fellow “Project Runway” personality Nina Garcia, Robin Roberts of “Good Morning America,” TV fashionista Louise Roe and Jess Cagle of Entertainment Weekly. I love Robin’s pale, gleaming column, but I think Louise looks like she’s stolen her grandma’s dress. It’s pale pink with gathers in the front and looks way too drab and fussy for my taste.

6:05: “It’s very electric,” says supporting actress frontrunner Octavia Spencer of “The Help” of the Oscars hoopla. She looks completely elegant in her long sparkly off-white dress. That seems to be the color of the night; five minutes in and we’ve already got a trend going.

6:06: Jonah Hill, who is nominated for supporting actor for “Moneyball,” brought his mom as his date. So sweet! Jonah looks pretty cool in all black – at first glance. Until you see the bow tie. No one under the age of 55 should wear a bow tie in my opinion. He’s rooting for his “Moneyball” co-star Brad Pitt, who was born in Shawnee, for best actor, naturally.

6:08: Maya Rudolph of “Bridesmaids” says that the secrets to surviving the Oscars red carpet are snacks and shapewear. She looks really pretty in a deep purple column with just a few glittering touches.

6:09: Just saw a clip of Sacha Baron Cohen hobnobbing on the red carpet in his “The Dictator” getup. I guess he decided to get that out of his system before the show, since the Academy said he wasn’t allowed to take the stage in character. His outrageous characters can be fun, but I can’t disagree with the decision. Who wants to have their big Oscar night upstage by a guy in a goofy fake beard and military uniform?

6:12: Best actress nominee Rooney Mara is in pale Givenchy and with the exception of the jet black hair, she couldn’t look more different from her character Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” She looks very retro with the unusual neckline of the dress. But she’s refusing to play the Oscars red carpet inane babble game with Roberts, who tries to draw a comparison between the Oscars and the Super Bowl, since Rooney’s dad is New York Giants executive Timothy Christopher Mara. It’s not like the Super Bowl at all and she never thought of comparing them, Rooney says. Awkward, but if you toss out an inane question, you can’t be surprised if you get shut down.

6:13: Stop the red carpet, Jessica Chastain wins best dressed even if she ends up watching her “The Help” co-star Octavia Spencer take home best actress. She’s wearing a stunning McQueen gown that is black with sort of a golden flame pattern. It is gorgeous with her red hair.

6:17: Milla Jovovich is attending her first Oscars. She looks amazing as well, even if all the pale off-white dresses are starting to run together a bit for me. But her sleek sparkle-covered gown has an off the shoulder flair that helps set it apart.

6:21: Emma Stone is wearing a fuschia gown, and while I love the color – it’s a particularly bold choice with her red hair – I am not digging the bow. She is such a lovely lady, and she looks like a rather haphazardly wrapped Christmas gift right now.

6:24: Tim just reported that Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer are No. 1 and 2 on the best dressed assessments on Twitter. Miss Piggy is coming in third as the best dressed at the Oscars, according to the Twitter realm. I can’t wait to see Madam Muppets outfit!

6:28: Best actress nominee Viola Davis’ (“The Help”) Vera Wang dress is incredible: gorgeously green, a few well-placed sparkles, an interesting skirt and it is apparently being held up by magic. I almost didn’t recognize her with her hair so short and reddish, but it really sets off those striking ear baubles. I wonder if it’s for a part. I’ll have to research that a bit.

6:30: Michelle Williams reveals that she tried out her Marilyn Monroe skills on the mailman and census taker while preparing for her best actress-nominated role in “My Week with Marilyn.” She always looks so elegant on the red carpet, and I love her bright coral dress with her usual short elfin blond locks.
