Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (“Capote”) has been cast in “The Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire,” Lionsgate announced today.

Hoffman has been cast as Plutarch Heavensbee, the clever Head Gamemaker overseeing the 75th Annual Hunger Games, AKA the Quarter Quell. He is the first new actor confirmed to join the sequel, according to CatchingFireCasting.com. “Sucker Punch” actress Jena Malone has been in talks to play the coveted part of District 7 tribute Johanna Mason, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but her casting has not yet been confirmed.

“The Hunger Games” stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones and Donald Sutherland are set to return for the follow-up. “I Am Legend” helmer Francis Lawrence will direct “Catching Fire,” due in theaters Nov. 22.

Here is the “Catching Fire” synopsis:

In the thrilling sequel “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” Katniss Everdeen and fellow tribute Peeta Mellark have barely returned home after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games when they are whisked away once again by the Capitol. Forced to leave her family and best friend Gale, Katniss is dispatched on a victory tour of Panem with Peeta, where rebellion is seething in all 12 districts. The Capitol is enraged and ready to strike back . . . as President Snow prepares the most diabolical edition of the Hunger Games yet. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has over 36 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.
