My fellow cinephiles, we now have more indicators – to go along with our gut feeling – that Daniel Day-Lewis’ portrayal of Abraham Lincoln is going to be even more stunning than even his uncanny resemblance to the 16th president of the United States on the poster for “Lincoln.”

The first trailer for “Lincoln,” Steven Spielberg’s biopic of one of our nation’s most beloved leaders, debuted today, and you don’t even need the whole 2:20 preview to feel sure that Day-Lewis (“There Will Be Blood,” “My Left Foot”) will be in the hunt for a third Oscar in the coming awards season.

Spielberg’s film doesn’t cover the whole of Lincoln’s fascinating life, instead focusing on the final days of the Civil War as Lincoln clashes with members of his cabinet over the issue of abolishing slavery.

“Lincoln” features a sterling cast, including fellow Oscar winners Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jackie Earle Haley, Jared Harris and Chickasha-born Lee Pace.

The film is due in theaters Nov. 16.
