Oklahoma country music superstar Blake Shelton will be getting a co-host for the 2013 ACM Awards, but the Academy of Country Music is making fans work for the name to be revealed.
In October, fellow Sooner State-born and bred superstar Reba McEntire announced she was ending her run as host of the Academy of Country Music Awards to focus on her new sitcom “Malibu Country.” As previously reported, the flame-haired songstress stepped aside after a record 14 appearances.
McEntire first hosted the show in 1986. She has hosted the ACM Awards every year since 1999, helping the show to grow its ratings. For the past two years, she and Shelton co-hosted the show.
“I hate it. I mean, I really do, but she’s busy, she’s got her sitcom going now, and I get it. So those are big shoes to fill, and I didn’t want to do this thing by myself,” Shelton says in the above video. “To find somebody equal to that level of stardom, we pretty much gave up. So we set the bar just a little bit lower.”
The cheeky Tishomingo resident goes on to add that the producers weren’t able to find somebody particularly good looking to co-host the show with him and eventually lowered the bar to “finally we thought, ‘Man, if we can just get somebody that can read,’ which this is country music and that’s narrowing the field down.”
He says in the video that the artist is a fan favorite “to the point where I’m starting to feel the pressure of this person’s stardom creeping up into my territory, and I’m hoping to use this opportunity as co-hosting with this person to completely disrupt and derail this person’s career. Look, it’s desperate times and I had to take what I could get, OK?”
Fans can go to www.acmcountry.com and tweet to unlock the identity of Blake’s ACM Awards co-host. The name will be revealed at the 25,000-tweet mark. According to the graphic at www.acmcountry.com, about 15,000 tweets have been sent so far.
It’s barely begun, but 2013 already has all the hallmarks of another busy year for Shelton, who has quietly released a new single called “It’d Sure Be Cool if You Did”:
