George Strait’s last ride has begun.
The King of Country launched his “The Cowboy Rides Away Tour” Friday night with a home-state show in Lubbock, Texas. He made the second stop on his 2013-14 farewell tour right here in Oklahoma City Saturday night with a sold-out performance at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
It was an emotional night both for the fans and the superstar, who seemed near tears as he played heartrendingly appropriate songs like “Troubadour,” “I’ll Always Remember You” and, of course, his customary closer, “The Cowboy Rides Away.”
Although he didn’t have to change up the tried-and-true format of his wildly popular show, he did it anyway, regaling his fervent fans with tales of his early days recording in Nashville, punctuated with deep album cuts like “80 Proof Bottle of Tear Stopper” and classic hits like “Marina del Rey.”
