JD McPherson added to Newport Folk Festival lineup

Retro rocker JD McPherson, who hails from Broken Arrow, has been added to the lineup of the venerable Newport Folk Festival.

Organizers announced McPherson’s addition to this year’s festival today on Twitter (@Newportfolkfest) and Facebook (Facebook.com/newportfolkfest).

Founded in 1959, the Newport Folk Festival Festival has become renowned for introducing a number of performers who went on to become major stars, most notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan.

This year’s festival is set for July 26-28 in Fort Adams State Park, Newport, R.I.

Along with McPherson, the lineup includes Jim James, The Lumineers, Shovels and Rope, Jason Isbell, Andrew Bird, Kingsley Flood, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, Spirit Family Reunion, Michael Kiwanuka, Houndmouth, The Last Bison and The Lone Bellow.

It’s been a huge day of festival announcements for McPherson: As previously reported, he also announced today as one of the performers at the massive 2013 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, set for  June 13-16 in Manchester, Tenn. In addition, he was named today one of the headliners for the sixth annual Norman Music Festival, which will be  April 25-27 in downtown Norman.

McPherson will play a home state show at 7 p.m. Saturday at historic Cain’s Ballroom, 413 N Main in Tulsa. For more information, go to www.cainsballroom.com.
