NORMAN — Last October, Notre Dame freshman quarterback Everett Golson led the Irish to a monumental 30-13 victory at Oklahoma.
Golson carried that momentum through an unbeaten regular season, with his only loss as starter coming in the national championship game.
His promising career is now on hold, though, with the announcement that he's been suspended for academic reasons and won't be with the football team next fall.
Does that give the Sooners an extra edge in their return trip to Notre Dame on Sept. 28? Not necessarily.
The Irish defense remains stout, and Notre Dame will still hold the quarterback edge, experience-wise, anyway.
Senior-to-be Tommy Rees has started 20 games in his career, including 12 in 2011, while Oklahoma's quarterback — be he Blake Bell, Kendal Thompson or Trevor Knight — will be making his first career road start at Notre Dame.
Oklahoma's three 2013 nonconference games all come early in the schedule. The games are broken up by a Sept. 7 conference game against West Virginia and a bye weekend.
Here's an early look at Oklahoma's 2013 nonconference opponents:
When: Saturday, Aug. 31
Where: Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman
Head coach: Todd Berry (17-20 in three seasons)
All-time series vs. OU: First meeting
2012 record: 8-5 (5-2 Sun Belt)
Outlook: The Warhawks shocked the college football world with an overtime upset of then-No. 8 Arkansas to open last season, and then lost a 47-42 shoot-out with Baylor a few weeks later. ULM returns 18 starters, including four-year starting quarterback Kolton Browning, next season.
