NBA legend George Gervin thinks Kevin Durant will be better than him

by Anthony Slater Published: June 12, 2013

Sports comparisons are often unfair, especially in the NBA, where many of the league’s star players are so great because they are so unique.

There’s only one Michael Jordan, only one LeBron James and only one Kevin Durant, a 6-foot-10 two-guard in a power forward’s body, with shooting range and handles far surpassing others his size.

But still, the comparisons remain, partly because they do provide some historical context and mainly because, well, they’re fun to talk about.

When it comes to KD’s NBA doppelgänger, many people often point to George Gervin, a silky 6-foot-7 wing who starred for the San Antonio Spurs in the 70′s and 80′s.

With the NBA Finals in San Antonio, ESPN had Gervin on its First Take broadcast and asked him about the comparisons to Durant.

He agreed with some of it, debunked some of it and was genuinely complimentary of Durant throughout (video above).

“I think most people compare us because of our size,” Gervin said. “He’s a little bit taller than me, but can put the ball on the floor and shoot from a lot deeper than I can. He’s very accurate. Can’t throw a finger roll, can’t throw these left and right hooks just yet. But once he adds that to his repertoire, I think he’ll be much better than me.”

High praise from a nine-time All-Star and four-time scoring champ.

“I see this kid and he has tremendous ability,” Gervin continued. “He can flat out play the game and he loves the game, so over the summer time he’s working to get better, so that’s why I say his potential is scary.”
