Norman's Jazz in June opens Thursday

The 30th annual Jazz in June festival will open Thursday and continue nightly through Saturday in Norman. All performances are free.

— The 30th annual Jazz in June festival kicks off Thursday at Brookhaven Village, 3700 W Robinson St.

Singer/songwriter Parker Millsap will take the stage at 7 p.m., followed at 9 p.m. by guitar great Duke Robillard and his band.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and refreshments for the outdoor performances.

The festival continues Friday at Brookhaven Village with A Taste of Herb opening at 7:15 p.m., followed by Fareed Haque and Math Games! at 9:15 p.m.

On Saturday, The Paseo Street Walkers will open with a performance at 6 p.m. at Andrews Park, 201 W Daws St., followed at 7 p.m. by The Justin Echols Jazz Trio. The Norman High School Jazz Combo will perform during intermissions.

The headliner event, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band of New Orleans, will begin at 9 p.m.

For more than three decades, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band has incorporated funk and bebop into traditional New Orleans jazz to produce a unique and lively sound.

The band's latest compact disc, “Twenty Dozen,” features a seamless blending of such genres as rhythm and blues, jazz and funk, Afro-Latino grooves, Caribbean and even a Rihanna cover.
