Lawton officers involved in Wednesday shooting, Thursday traffic wreck, police report

A Lawton officer was involved in a shooting late Wednesday. Then another officer was in a crash Thursday on Lee Boulevard, police report.

Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting and a separate accident involving another officer in a patrol car, police Capt. Craig Akard said Thursday.

The shooting occurred about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday at 3907 NW Santa Fe Ave., Akard said.

Police went to that address after a 911 caller hung up the phone. When officers Eli Garcia and Miranda Durham arrived, Randal Wayne Ruth, Jr., 32, answered the front door with a handgun in his hand. Ruth pointed the weapon at the officers, Akard said.

Both officers drew their weapons and fired. After Ruth dropped the gun, officers performed first aid until paramedics arrived, Akard said.

Ruth was taken to Comanche County Memorial Hospital and treated, then taken to Lawton city jail. He was arrested on complaints of possession of marijuana and feloniously pointing a firearm, Akard said.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Garcia and Durham were both placed on administrative leave with pay, Akard said.
