“The Avengers” earned four prizes at the 39th Annual Saturn Awards, include Best Science Fiction Film, Best Supporting Actor (Clark Gregg), Best Direction (Joss Whedon) and Best Special Effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White, Guy Williams, Dan Sudick).

It’s just one more reason to celebrate last week’s big news that Robert Downey Jr. has signed a two-picture agreement to star as  Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3.” According to Nerdage, Whedon also is on board for “Marvel’s The Avengers 2,” set to begin production in March 2014 and open in theaters May 1, 2015.

“Killer Joe,” based on the screenplay by Tulsa native Tracey Letts, earned the Best Independent Film prize along with the Best Actor trophy for Matthew McConaughey.

On the movie side, “Life of Pi,” “Cloud Atlas,” “Skyfall,” “Frankenweenie,” “The Hunger Games,” “The Cabin in the Woods” and “The Dark Knight Rises” also won major and/or multiple awards.

In the television categories, Breaking Bad was the big winner. The series received three Saturn Awards: Best Presentation on Television, Best Actor (Bryan Cranston, in a tie with Kevin Bacon for The Following) and Best Supporting Actor on Television (Jonathan Banks).
