Do This, OKC

by Kerry Myers Published: July 3, 2013

As a native Oklahoman, I have spent my summers here as a “lake rat”. I was raised in Southwestern Oklahoma, where going to the lake is practically a religion for some. My family will put your child on skis as early as age five, and owning a boat and an RV goes right up there with owning a car.

As much as I love our Oklahoma lakes, anyone who goes camping on a regular basis knows that this pastime is not an inexpensive one. With gas up to around $5 a gallon at area lakes, not mentioning all of the extra things that we take camping that we think we need.

This summer, Oklahoma City has been hit with a new kind of summer fun: Stand Up Paddle Boarding. Flat-Tide Surf has came into our lives as a mobile pop up surf shop. Oklahoma has approximately 55, 646 miles of shoreline along lakes and ponds and 1,401 square miles of water area in lakes and ponds, according to the Oklahoma Water Resources Board.

Paddle Boarding is probably my new favorite water sport, mostly because I see so much versatility in this one board. You can sit or stand while you paddle, and it is a very calming, low impact water sport. SUP Yoga, or Stand-Up Paddle Board Yoga.

I hope to own a paddle board by next year, for many reasons. The cost to own your own paddle board runs in the low-mid one thousand dollar range, as with all water sports there are many different brands to choose from. However, the buck stops there. Besides transporting yourself to your chosen body of water, expenses are covered. No gas in the boat, because you don’t need a boat. No trailer hitch. No depending on someone else to take you to the lake. Just take your board and go.

Flat Tide Surf opened this summer in Oklahoma City, offering rentals and training. Paddle boarding has increased in popularity this year all along the west coast and South Texas; take advantage of the opportunity while you still can.
