Box of ashes found will be reunited with family Published: July 4, 2013

FOLLY BEACH, SC — From long-lost high school rings to World War II mortar shells, treasures of all sorts have been found at area beaches over the years.

But the container that washed ashore on Sunday is probably one of the most unusual of all.

Around noon, first-year Charleston County lifeguard Ryan Laban, 16, was sitting in the last lifeguard chair on the washout side of the pier. Two teenagers brought him a sealed, brown plastic box about the size of a shoe box, and weighing around 5 pounds, that they had found in the surf, according to the Post and Courier.

A white sticker on the outside made it clear what — or rather, who — was inside: the remains of Lee Jackson Thompson, who was cremated at a Roanoke, Va., funeral home on June 2, 2010.
