Sophomore class officers from Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School held a car wash they called “Moore-Wash,” with proceeds going to one of their theology teachers, Clyde Grover, whose home was destroyed in the May 20 tornado.

The June 22 car wash involved about 20 students and three teacher sponsors.

After seven hours of car washing, the volunteers had collected $2,007, with the largest donation being $500. They also are awaiting donations from people as far away as Texas and Florida.

Sophomore class President Ryan Mai-Do chaired the fundraiser.

“Mr. Grover has done so much for the student body, and not only has he served us as a community, he has done his service in the Air Force,” Mai-Do said. “He has always been there for any student when tough times occur.”

The car wash was not the only way Bishop McGuinness students donated to the tornado victims.

On the first day of summer vacation, Mai-Do teamed with the junior class president, Jack Vesper, to take more than 65 volunteers to the Orr Family Farm.

Mai-Do said they set up snack stands to serve volunteers and any victims nearby. They served more than 1,200 volunteers that day, and many students helped victims get shoes, food, clothing and whatever else was needed.

“At Bishop McGuinness, one of our primary focuses is teaching our students to be people for others,” said theology teacher Amy Frame. “That's exactly what the students are doing who organized this car wash and saw it through the end.

“These students were putting their faith and education into action and heeding the call to help and offer support when it was necessary."
