It took a few more years than what was hoped for by Judy Hatfield, but construction on the old downtown library, and the conversion into apartments and retail, is finally underway.
I’ll admit, there’s still a part of me that wishes that Judy could have found a way to stick with her original plan for condominiums. That project, drawn up during the pre-Great Recession, would have resulted in the building looking like this:
It is to Judy Hatfield’s credit, however, that this building didn’t end up another boarded up mess that sits dark for decades. She took the biggest hits a developer can take, and yet found a way to adapt and survive on this project. Historic tax credits and conversion to apartments kept this development alive, and while the tax credits ruled out the sort of changes originally envisioned, I’m betting the outcome will surprise folks and add life to this once dark corner of the central business district.
Once complete, the Carnegie will feature 19 apartments, structured parking and 24,000 square feet of mixed-use space on the corner of Robinson and Dean A. McGee Avenue.
