Mike'Quan Deane has already won a state championship. But the Tulsa Memorial tight end won that title in basketball. The Chargers made the Class 5A football playoffs last year but were eliminated in the first round with a 35-26 loss to Claremore.
As he readies for his senior season, Deane still has something to prove. He pulled in 20 receptions last season for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns and even ran for six more touchdowns in 24 carries. But he hasn't brought in the attention he needs to get where he wants to go.
Northern Colorado has offered Deane a scholarship, but the list stops there. Deane, who is No. 19 on The Oklahoman's class of 2014 Super 30 list, has attended camps and visited other universities but has yet to make a decision. He has another priority.
“I have to get my ACT score up,” Deane said. “That's what people have been telling me, too, ‘Just worry about school first.' So that's what I'm trying to do.”
The senior-to-be said Northern Colorado's offer did give him some extra motivation.
“When I wake up it helps me, when I work out, too,” he said. “That just gave me a confidence boost.”
