Standing backstage surrounded by sequined dresses, props and trophies, the scene was typical of any pageant. But the line of contestants waiting to be introduced to the crowd are not toddlers or teens, they’re all over the age of 60.

On Saturday afternoon in Midwest City the Ms. Oklahoma Senior America Pageant had 15 contestants vying for the chance to represent Oklahoma in Atlantic City for the Ms. Senior America Pageant.

A tattoo of a crown atop a rose with the pageant title below was visible just past a row of decorative stones on the dress of Vickey Rose, winner of the 2011 Ms. Oklahoma Senior America Pageant. “It was painful but I wanted it there,” the 64-year-old from Grand Lake said. “The pageant is a huge event in my life and still is.” And she wanted people to know about it. The tattoo started off as just a rose she got with her daughter when Rose was 60, but after winning the pageant in 2011 she decided to add to the rose.

Like many of the contestants, Rose had never entered a pageant. Her pastor suggested entering, “I don’t think I’m really pageant material,” said Rose. A singer her entire life, she was accustomed to the stage and thought it might help her singing career. She entered for the first time and won.

“I thought I would go home and resume my life at as it was, go on about my business, but my life has not been the same since.”

Rose said after winning the crown her life has turned back on. She is now busy performing again. Every year Rose returns to the pageant, not as a contestant, but to help however she can.”I’m getting to still be a part of it and I dearly love it.”
