Oklahoma State opens the 2014 college football season against Florida State in Arlington’s JerryWorld. The game is scheduled for Aug. 30, 2014. But could that showdown against the Seminoles be moved to Labor Day evening?
ESPN/ABC often tries to schedule a marquee game on Labor Day night to celebrate the opening week of college football. And more often than not the last decade, Florida State has been the prime attraction.
Florida State plays at Pittsburgh on Labor Day night this year. The Seminoles also played on Labor Day in 2009 (home against Miami), 2007 (at Clemson), 2006 (at Miami) and 2005 (home against Miami).
OSU-Florida State would be a terrific national television game. Much snazzier than the OSU-Mississippi State game in Houston on Aug. 31 this year. The Seminoles’ name packs a punch.
OSU, like most schools, prefers to play all Saturday games but grudgingly has given in for several Thursday night games, for reasons of national exposure and fulfilling Big 12 contract obligations. However, a game away from Stillwater does not carry the same burden. Playing at home, OSU has to worry about issues related to parking and merchants and season-ticket holders.
Playing in Arlington, the issues would be different.
“To be honest, we haven’t even talked about it,” said OSU associate athletic director Dave Martin. “To my knowledge, nobody has even thrown that out there. We’ve never spoken about it.”
OSU’s schedule for 2014 posts Florida State on Aug. 30, Missouri State on Sept. 6 and Texas-San Antonio on Sept. 13.
“The things you look into are, what’s the accessibility for your fans to make it to a game,” Martin said. “How does that affect them going to a game and making it to work the next day? What does your coach think about it? If they’re playing FCS (a Division I-AA opponent the next week), they might be interested in it. If you had a pretty tough non-conference game, they might not be fired about it.”
The Cowboys are open on Sept. 20 and might could move the Missouri State game to that date. But the Big 12 might want to keep Sept. 20 open for a potential conference game.
Lots of issues for a potential move to Labor Day. But great reward.
“I think that’s going to be a great matchup,” Martin said. “I think we’ll have a tremendous buildup for that game. That game, I think they’ll do really, really well at the box office.”
