Mario Dominguez can't stop thinking about what might have happened if he had been home Wednesday night when his fiancee, their infant son and other members of her family were killed.
Would he have been able to prevent their deaths? Would he have been the fifth victim? Would his death have been better than the reality he now faces — living without them?
Police arrested Daniel Green, 40, a few hours after four of his family members were found dead in their home at 4601 SE 79. Dominguez said Green was schizophrenic, and a gun kept in the home usually was locked away where he couldn't get to it.
Killed were Sallie Green, 57; Rebecca Cizek, 34; Katherine Cizek, 16; and Amario Dominguez III, who would have been 7 months old this month. Two other family members who lived in the house were not there at the time, Mario Dominguez said.
Sallie Green was the mother of Daniel Green and Rebecca Cizek. Katherine Cizek was Rebecca Cizek's daughter. Mario Dominguez said he was engaged to Rebecca Cizek and was the father of Amario Dominguez III, whom he called “Trey.”
“None of them deserved this,” Dominguez said through tears Friday. “They were so nice to Danny. I don't see how anything could have set him off to where he did this. There is no justification or explanation for what he did to his family.”
Dominguez lived in the home until a couple of weeks ago. He said he and his fiancee were working through some problems in their relationship. He has been blaming himself since he got the news.
“One of the first things I said was, ‘This wouldn't have happened if I had been there,'” Dominguez said. “I could have stopped Danny. Then again, I could have been the fifth body. That doesn't make me feel any better. Even if it would have been like that, I would have been with my family instead of moving on without them.”
Dominguez said everyone in the family tried to keep Daniel Green on his medication. When he didn't take it, he had episodes.
Worried about safety
Green is obsessed with actress Selena Gomez, a former Disney star. His Facebook profile is a shrine to her, with dozens of pictures posted with captions expressing his love and fantasizing about being with her.
“It was a love/hate thing,” Dominguez said. “One day he was in love with Selena Gomez. The next day he would be mad at her.”
Dominguez said he had a confrontation with Green several months ago
“He had thought I said something about Selena Gomez,” Dominguez said. “He got up in my face. I knew he was sick, so I just let it go.”
Family members usually could persuade Green to take his medication, and the episodes would stop. They were worried he might get his hands on a gun, Dominguez said.
“A couple of years ago he discharged a firearm into his own leg by accident. He had a gun in his pocket, and he fell and it went off. There was one gun in the house that was usually inaccessible to him. It was locked up. I guess somehow he found a way to access it.”
The family accepted Green despite his mental problems and all loved him. Dominguez said none of them thought he was capable of hurting them.
“I worried about the safety of my family sometimes, but then he would take his medicine and be all right,” Dominguez said.
Dominguez is left to remember the woman he loved and the son he won't get to see grow up. He said he fell in love with Rebecca shortly after they got together in 2009.
“She was just a unique person,” he said. “She was so full of life and love. I'm not perfect. We had our problems, but I always knew she loved me deeply. My son was sixth months old. He didn't do anything to anybody.”
