More feedback from users about Facebook commenting

A couple of weeks ago, I received this message from a NewsOK reader:

As an adult that values my time, I refuse to re-join Facebook to participate in discussions. Facebook is nothing but a time-suck and wastes productivity, and I refuse to be a slave to it. Please allow us to comment without having to join something we are against. We won’t be dictated to by Facebook!!!

I get feedback like this from time to time. Switching to Facebook commenting is something we had expected to hear about when we made the change last December. I wrote about some of the feedback in a note in this blog in May of this year and in December of 2012.

Since those posts, nothing has really changed. We really haven’t received much more feedback about it. But when we do get negative feedback, it generally comes from people who don’t like Facebook — or any form of social media. Some people who refuse to use Facebook feel left out of the ability to connect.

However, allowing for easy access, wide acceptance and high participation were some of our goals. We were intentional and analytical about using Facebook as our commenting engine. That choice didn’t come from a loyalty to a specific social media platform. We wanted the tool that has the greatest reach. The fact is that most people have an account and most people are already connected with other people through Facebook.

All that said, we will be flexible with our commenting platform as we continue to evolve with the ways of the web. Connecting with our community of readers is important to us and our newsroom.
