The Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission has approved the dates and bag limits for the 2013-14 waterfowl seasons and the most significant change from last year is the increase in the daily limits for geese.
The daily limit for Canada geese has increased from three to eight. The daily bag limit for light geese has increased from 20 to 50.
Josh Richardson, migratory game bird biologist for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, hopes the increase limits will entire more people to hunt geese, whose populations continue to grow. The birds continue to cause nuisance and depredation problems in the state, he said.
“We are trying to increase the harvest,” he said.
Light geese are extremely over-populated and Canada geese are trending in that direction, Richardson said. The population of Canada geese has been growing each year for the last 15 to 20 years, he said.
“Hopefully, having eight birds (as the daily limit for Canada geese) will get some folks back into the sport,” Richardson said.
For duck hunters, the daily limit during the September teal season has increased from four to six birds. The limit of scaups has been reduced from six to three birds daily and the daily limit for canvasbacks has increased from one to two.
