Hollis free safety Khalil Johnson is only a junior.
But the two-year starter was named to almost every postseason awards team last year and preseason team at the start of the 2013 season.
The honors flowed in after Johnson registered eight interceptions and 24 tackles. He also stood in at quarterback, throwing for 932 yards, rushing for 1,081 more and scoring 36 touchdowns.
Oh, and he punted, too.
Johnson's used to being the star. During the offseason, he finished first at the state track meet in the 100-meter sprint (10.97 seconds).
BURNS FLAT-DILL CITY'S LINEBACKER LEADS TEAM IN WEIGHT ROOM
Burns Flat-Dill City linebacker and fullback Tanner Renken only has one year as a starter under his belt. But that doesn't stop the 6-foot-2, 240 pound junior from leading in the weight room.
Renken lines up next to fellow strong man Aaron Knight, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound junior. He is a two-year starter.
THOMAS WON'T HAVE TROUBLE FILLING GAPS
Thomas might have lost 15 seniors, but the Terriers return a lot of talent, like Schell Apple.
Apple, a wide receiver and linebacker, is a 6-3, 170-pound three-year starter. He is one of the best wide receivers in Class A. Last season, Apple registered 100 receptions. Defensively, he accumulated 51 tackles and one interception.
That's not all the Terriers have defensively. Senior D.J. Price, 6-1, 170 pounds, is a two-year starter at linebacker who amassed 101 tackles last season.
CORDELL'S BEASLEY BELIEVES IN TEAM'S DEPTH
Cordell coach Dustin Beasley believes, with seven returning starters on both sides of the ball, his Blue Devils will finish much better in the district this year. The open position that isn't set is the defensive end spot.
“We're trying to figure out who best fits,” Beasley said. “But we have about four kids that can do it.”
Beasley, in his fifth year at Cordell, said there are a number of skill players and offensive lineman who stand out.
There's four players on defense who have three years of experience. There's defensive back Colton Henson, who has started almost every game on defense as well as offense. Then there's quarterback Tyler Beasley, who compiled 4,400 yards in his first two seasons.
Snyder will count on just three seniors with starting experience. One of those is MacKenzie Gamblain, a two-way starter at offensive tackle and defensive end.
For Apache, look toward senior quarterback Tyler Freeman and junior wide receiver Jalen Demebo. The 6-2, 210-pound Freeman is a three-year starter, as is the 5-9, 160-pound Demebo.
