Bob Stoops had his first Monday luncheon today and had some interesting things to say. We’ll get to those later. For now, though, Stoops also released the first depth chart of the season. Some interesting notes:
-After the way Damien Williams performed last season, most thought he’d be the clear No. 1 at running back. But Williams is listed as co-No. 1 at the spot with Brennan Clay (whose name appears first).
-Connor Knight, a redshirt freshman and the twin brother of starting quarterback Trevor Knight, is listed No. 2 at tight end behind Brannon Green and ahead of Taylor McNamara. It was McNamara’s signing and early enrollment that prevented Trevor Knight from enrolling at OU a semester earlier.
-Quincy Russell as Chuka Ndulue‘s backup at defensive tackle. Ndulue won’t play Saturday so the likelihood is that Russell starts.
-Jalen Saunders is atop the depth chart at one of the wide receiver spots, ahead of Trey Metoyer and Jaz Reynolds. Sterling Shepard is atop the slot spot, ahead of Derrick Woods and K.J. Young.
-Nick Hodgson is listed as the kickoff guy, although Stoops said he was still deciding between Hodgson and Michael Hunnicutt, who will handle placekicking duties.
-Quentin Hayes is listed as the starter at strong safety, ahead of true freshman Ahmad Thomas. Dakota Austin and Stanvon Taylor, both freshmen, are listed as backups behind Aaron Colvin at one corner spot.
-Josiah St. John is listed behind Jake Reed, a walk-on from Ardmore, at left tackle.
