Write the headline that we'll all be talking about

When you’ve written the headline that everyone remembers, you get to walk a little taller in our newsroom.

It’s a true point of pride when you hit the mark and draw a reader in.

Me? I don’t know that feeling. Usually, my headline ideas are followed by a pained look and a comment like …

“That’s an idea.”

… and then awkward silence until someone else talks.

One NewsOK web editor knows the pride behind a great headline, though. And he didn’t even work for us when he wrote it.

Matt Carney, who has served as the NewsOK home page and social media editor in the evenings since June, had a claim to fame before joining our staff.

“The Beard, Sheard,” it said.

The headline came after sports editor Mike Sherman did what he always does with big stories. He goes on Twitter and Facebook and requests headline ideas to top the story in the following day’s editions of The Oklahoman.

He did it that quiet day last October when the big news broke that OKC Thunder fan favorite and budding star James Harden had been traded to the Houston Rockets.

He’ll do the same thing Saturday when the OU and OSU games are wrapping up. Follow him at @MikeSherman or follow @NewsOKSports to join the fun.

Matt didn’t design the page that day. But the headline gave the designer the inspiration to create a captivating page that makes you turn the page and read more.

That’s what a great headline does.

And that’s why we’ll be on social media as the game winds down looking for our audience to brainstorm with us.
