OSU football notebook: Mike Gundy reiterates Clint Chelf 'an important part of our team'

The Cowboys coach would not divulge any details about his discussions with Chelf or how the quarterback handled the decision.

Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf lost his starting job Saturday, when two lackluster possessions led to J.W. Walsh entering — and finishing — the game and putting up 135 passing yards and 125 rushing yards.

After the game, Gundy announced Walsh as the starter for the Cowboys' next game at Texas-San Antonio, yet added he hadn't yet had a chance to discuss the quarterback situation in detail with Chelf and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich.

During Sunday evening's media teleconference, Gundy reiterated that he expects Chelf to remain ready to play — the Cowboys certainly know about quarterback injuries — but wouldn't divulge any details about his discussions with Chelf or how the quarterback handled the decision.

“I would never talk about anything about that,” Gundy said. “That's kind of a private matter. As I said, with Clint, he's an important part of our team. We have to make decisions, and we've made a decision that J.W. is going to be the starter.

“We certainly want Clint to be with us and to continue to work and improve, and if he's in the game, we would expect him to play well like he did last year.”

Justin Gilbert snagged his first interception since the Fiesta Bowl two seasons ago Saturday, picking off Mississippi State's Tyler Russell in the first quarter.

He nearly had another later in the game — and likely a chance to take it to the house. But the ball bounced off his hands.

What happened?

“It hit my fingertips,” Gilbert said. “Once I tried to bring it in, I just lost control of it. I caught it and then dropped it. I'm not gonna deny that. I just knew I had it. No one was in front of me and I doubt anybody would have caught me from behind.”
