NORMAN — Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Jay Norvell said Tuesday that he believes officials got a controversial interception ruling correct in Saturday’s season-opening win over Louisiana-Monroe.

Early in the fourth quarter, quarterback Trevor Knight threw a deep pass to sophomore receiver Trey Metoyer, who appeared to come down with the grab before ULM defender Cordero Smith ripped the ball came loose.

The ball never hit the ground. The play was originally ruled a Metoyer catch, then officials convened and said it was incomplete.

But upon further review, Smith was awarded an interception because Metoyer never completed the catch.

Norvell said it was the right call.

“He’s gotta come down with the ball,” Norvell said. “I mean, you don’t put that in the official’s hands, and that’s a pretty clear rule. When you come down, you’ve gotta roll over with the football. It can’t come out at any time.

“So, to me, that was a good call. He’s gotta finish that catch and give it to the officials. That’s what we always talk about.”

Metoyer’s only catch Saturday was a 13-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter.
