Mumford & Sons plays impromptu soccer match at Guthrie's Jelsma Stadium

Guthrie’s football program had its own experience with the band Mumford & Sons last week during the Gentlemen of the Road Stopover tour.

There wasn’t any personal contact, but the Grammy-winning band and others found their way onto the field of historical Jelsma Stadium on Thursday for an impromptu soccer match.

There was just one minor issue — they stepped foot onto the field before the Bluejays have done so this year. They also left a few spots torn up along with some cigarette butts from apparently smoking while playing the match.

Still, Guthrie coach Rafe Watkins found some humor in the match.

“It was a pretty good deal,” he said. I imagine it was a pretty intense soccer game. I wish I would have been there to see it.”

The team was having its weekly dinner at a local church during the match.

Watkins said being around Guthrie during the weekend was hectic, noting how backed up traffic was on Interstate 35 when the Bluejays traveled back from Duncan on Friday.

“From Edmond to Guthrie, it looked like an OU football game had just let out with all of the traffic heading south,” he said. “It was just bumper-to-bumper, two-by-two all the way. It was unreal.”

Guthrie’s home opener is Friday against Ponca City.
