NORMAN — Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Lester says his agency has helped raise more than $42,000 for a scholarship in honor of a University of Oklahoma student-ballerina who was kidnapped and murdered in 1996.

Lester presented a check for $42,343 to the OU Foundation on Monday after a golf tournament fundraiser for the Juli Busken Memorial Scholarship.

A ballerina at the university's School of Dance and a native off Benton, Ark., Busken was kidnapped from her Norman apartment in December 1996 and found shot to death hours later at Lake Stanley Draper. Anthony Castillo Sanchez was convicted in 2006 in her death and remains on Oklahoma's death row.

Busken's parents, Bud and Mary Jean Busken, were on hand for Lester's presentation.
